Cone Beam Computerized Tomography
(CBCT) Technology

The value of examining the three-dimensional structures of the human body using the Computed Axial Tomography (CAT) scan has long been used in medicine. Its value and benefit to medicine and society was recognized with the awarding of a Nobel Prize in Medicine to its inventors.

Hitachi CB MercuRay™

CBCT uses a variation of this x-ray imaging technique, but at a much lower radiation dosage than conventional medical CTs. This is because the CBCT shoots out a cone-shaped x-ray beam and captures a large volume of area requiring minimal amounts of generated x-rays. Within 10 seconds, the machine rotates 360º around the head and captures 288 static images. The computer then reassembles these primary images and creates a secondary reconstruction of 512 conventional CT slices that contains all the volumetric data acquired from the patient scan.
